What is a defibrillator?

Defibrillators are medical devices which are used to treat life-threating fibrillations. This occurs when a victim’s heart cannot beat properly and as a result, vital oxygen cannot be circulated throughout the body. The role of a defibrillator is to restart the victim’s heart and in doing so, potentially save their life. Without access to a defibrillator, chances of survival for someone experiencing from cardiac arrest are extremely low.

When should a defibrillator be used?

When someone is suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, which we have also recently published a piece about, it is vital that they are treated effectively and immediately. If someone is suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, a defibrillator will offer life saving treatment. And, in most cases, acting quickly is one of the key ways in which a life can be saved through the use of a defibrillator.

Are defibrillators easy to use?

Thankfully, defibrillators are designed to be as easy to use as possible and are available in most public spaces, both outdoor and indoor. Since their main purpose is to help save lives, the more streamlined the process of using a defibrillator, the higher the likelihood of saving a life. In addition, defibrillators typically contain instructions as to what the procedure entails should you be required to administer life saving treatment. Should you find yourself in a position which requires you to use a defibrillator, clear, easy to follow instructions should be provided to you. This is due the fact that defibrillators are designed to be used by both medical professionals and non-medical professionals. Further to this,

Are defibrillators expensive?

As with most things, the price of defibrillators can vary. The price of a defibrillator is based upon a number of factors such as the additional features of the defibrillator, or whether or not it is WiFi compatible. Typically, an AED Defibrillator will cost anywhere from €900 to €2500.

Are there different types of defibrillators?

Yes, there are different types of defibrillators. There are three main types of defibrillators. These include Automated External Defibrillators, also known as AED’s, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICD’s) and Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillators (WCD’s). Of these three, it is arguably AED’s which are the most widely known. Furthermore, in contrast to an AED which is lightweight and easy to transport, ICD’s & WCD’s are surgically placed on the victim, in a similar manner to that of a pacemaker. O

Can defibrillators be used to treat children?

Yes, AED’s can be used on children and infants.

Where are defibrillators stored?

All defibrillators have specific storage requirements. For instance, if your defibrillator is intended for outdoor use, for instance at a beach, then you will require an outdoor storage unit. Here at Heart Safety Solutions, we provide a wide range of storage solutions, designed to cater to every potential need and requirement.
